So my Mac is very, very quiet most of the time. It only turns on its fans if it is really being pushed. It also has the side benefit of being essentially silent. In many cases it is 1.5X faster than the 7950. Many apps are now using the GPU as much or more than the CPU for computational intensive apps.

I already had Metal support for my Mac Pro (Radeon 7950), but needed a little more oomph in GPU performance.

All the techs were very nice and spent a good amount of time with me but good grief! I would think this would be common knowledge for a product that's currently being promoted heavily. That three calls to tech support at OWC and one to Radeon didn't catch this is amazing to me. Now DVI to HDMI works and there is no need to spend my time and money returning a product that was functioning properly. Digging further I found that there was an option I could choose in my newer monitors that would correct the issue. I wound up digging out an old monitor that had a DVI input and ran a straight DVI to DVI connection.
We concluded that that DVI port was bad and I got a return auth. Nothing worked - although any and all combination of the same monitors and adapters worked with my old GPU. I tried 3 monitors and several DVI adapters of different types. When using a DVI to HDMI adaptor I kept getting a pink overlay on all monitors. This is a three star review because tech support from both OWC and Radeon completely missed diagnosing an issue I had when using the DVI port. As I'm using the second PCIe slot in my Mac for an Avid HDX card (which also requires power from motherboard), I'm using an external Corsair PSU I had to power the graphics card. Thanks to this solution, my decade-old Mac will not go quietly into the night just yet. The lack of a glowing Apple at boot up was a little disconcerting, but within 15 seconds, the familiar login screen appeared.Īpple needs to sell new hardware, so it gradually orphans older, functional workstations like the 2010/2012 Pros. Just make sure to plug the dual power cables into their plugs first - then seat the new video card, otherwise you won’t have enough space to maneuver. So, the new card drives both with zero fan noise. My one regret is that the mother board only has two power plugs for the cable - I had hoped to keep using the original 1GB Radeon card to drive the 2nd monitor. On its own, this beast simply draws way too much power through the PCI slot, so this is a clever solution.
I think the key is the custom power cable that OWC bundles with this card.

Gotta say I was skeptical of plugging a non-supported PC card into the Mac and expect it to flame on with no problems. 10.14 and up requires the “metal” video card, and my stock system was no longer compatible.
Hit the wall when OSX 10.14 was released, not to mention no more application updates.
